Abstract
NZAC’s Inaugural Counsellor Education Conference is a significant event for the profession and for counsellor education. The conference comes at a significant period in the development of counselling in Aotearoa New Zealand when state mandated professional regulation has been ncreasingly seen as the benchmark for acceptable professional practice in the health sector. Whether regulation of counselling is finally mandated by the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act (2003) or through a form of audited self-regulation, it is clear that claims to professional status by groups such as NZAC require some form of state and community recognition.
