Abstract

This outdoor exhibition at the Waitakaruru Sculpture Park, Hamilton, was curated by Andrew Clifford (Curator, Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery, based at the Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland University). To summarise his curatorial aims in the catalogue, Clifford writes "Rather than risk being overwhelmed by this vast landscape, art must confront its place within the site and wider environment."

Various artists were in this show, including Mary-Louise Browne, Gregor Kregar, Regan Gentry, AD Schierning and Leon van den Eijkel. The works by Gareth Williams belong to a series of work that explore instances of vernacular architecture as they appear in the New Zealand landscape. They examine the relationships between designed and non-designed architectural elements in the landscape and also consider human needs and social practices. These works explore structures that relate to various types of recreational architecture. They are quotations from existing sites referred to in their titles. The works are specifically sited for their perspective views over the landscape.
