Abstract or Summary

The Fieldays Exhibitor is a daily newspaper and online news site produced by Media Arts students for the National Fieldays in Hamilton. The newspaper/site reflects most of the changes in technology now used to drive mass media and uses the skills taught to a range of students across different specialisations: journalists, photographers, graphic designers, web designers. In the enquiry-based learning model, the project allows students to apply skills learnt in the classroom to a real-time scenario: they are expected to produce the paper and online site to strict deadlines in a professional manner. The project challenges specialist tutors who find the rapid development of software is enabling students to work across a divergence of media platforms using a range of skills not all taught in any one specialisation. This divergence is forcing hitherto specific academic pathways to talk to one another and adopt a team approach to achieve a joint outcome. In the School of Media Arts this is referred to as an intermedia approach – an approach which has been discussed in theory by tutors for some years, but is now a reality that is impacting on daily teaching and learning practice in the School.
