Abstract or Summary

absolute ceiling is a technical term that refers to the maximum height above sea level that an aircraft can fly. Planes fly due to air pressure changes caused by the shape of their wings. At certain altitudes, the density of the air isn't enough to support the weight of the plane subject to the load of the wings. This point is called the "absolute ceiling". The word "absolute" in philosophical terms is said to be the ultimate basis for reality and the word "ceiling" is defined as the upper limits or the maximum. Through this on-going project I am seeking to explore ideas about the contemporary sublime and phenomenology. My work seeks to incorporate aerial perspectives that aim to consider what the sublime is as a contemporary experience. The finished works aim to engage with ideas of scale and perspective in relation to space and time by utilising a multiplicity of perspectives and fluctuating expanses observed from the air. All of my photography, video and installation works incorporate some visual material sourced from an aerial perspective. This is usually taken from an aircraft but can sometimes include paragliding or some other mode of flight. My methodology includes using a digital still or video camera for image capture and a laptop as a mobile studio the embodiment of travel being important to the making of the work in order to reflect our transitory experience as travellers.
