Abstract or Summary

In 2009, the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) signed a letter of understanding with the Kim Hyung Jik University of Technology in Pyongyang, DPRK (North Korea). It is unusual for an institution outside DPRK to have this kind of partnership understanding. It could be said that this is not in any sense a mature partnership, yet there have been visits from Wintec to DPRK (5) and a visit of three DPRK scholars to Wintec for eight weeks in 2014. Behind these visits is an immense amount of networking and procedural work. This presentation outlines the way this partnership came into being, with reflections on the most recent visit of three scholars to the Wintec in 2014. It may be instructive to others contemplating such an approach to a DPRK institution to hear of our achievements and successes, as well as frustrations and setbacks. The paper covers very practical matters involved in the partnership, such as communications, accommodation, funding, immigration, travel, culture and language. It also looks at the expectations of both partners. Jin Yoon reflects on the experience of hosting the DPRK visitors from the point of view of a Wintec Academic Staff Member of Korean ethnicity.
