Abstract

This workshop will look at the design of courses and activities that facilitate student centred learning. The student centred approach to learning and teaching has been chosen as the main focus of teaching at Wintec’s new Engineering and Trades Facility, where emphasis is on the development of student skills and abilities through the use of real world engineering activities. Within this new facility the Centre of Engineering and Industrial Design (CEID) has been engaged in developing these activities supported by professional development workshops and the development of a tool called OSTAR.
To facilitate the use of student centred learning courses and activities were designed using the OSTAR model. This model (based on OTARA model (reference?)) enables tutors to clearly outline the Objectives, Success Criteria, Themes, Activities and Resources of courses and activities. By using this model tutors can clearly see where activities can be used to allow students to engage with the content in a real world context. This model also has the added advantage of ensuring that activities are aligned with learning outcomes.
The workshop will outline the rationale for the OSTAR model, and allow participants to try it out for themselves. Examples will be given of how it is being used in CEID. If participants have any course or activities that they would like to redesign using the student centred approach then we encourage you to bring them along to the workshop.
