Abstract

I will make a documentary project as director, camera operator and editor, which will focus on a family in Hamilton, New Zealand. This is my home stay family that I have been living with since coming to Hamilton and they have agreed to be the subjects of my documentary film..
The family is made up of a Chinese emigrant (the wife) and a kiwi (the husband). New Zealand is an immigrant nation, so many people from different countries and backgrounds move to New Zealand every year, because New Zealand provides many opportunities. However there are some challenges and problems waiting to happen and to be solved by those immigrants.Dislocation: at the beginning of most people’s immigration to New Zealand is that they are out of their original life circle. For example, immigrants all have different cultural backgrounds and lifestyles; on the other hand the mainstream culture in New Zealand is adapted from western cultures. Alienation: for immigrant people, they are far from their home and live in new different surroundings at same time. Integration: with the passage of time, these immigrants gradually integrate into their surroundings. How to live in New Zealand like a Kiwi could be another challenge for immigrants, and to keep their own cultural identity but bring their own style, such as join in with local activities with kiwis. Cultural differences: the couple in this family grew up in different cultural backgrounds, it inevitably produces conflict on some of the ideas and concepts, and how to resolve these contradictions will be a challenge.
