Abstract or Summary

The focus of this presentation titled Responding to Māori deficit statistics in Aotearoa New Zealand , aims to demystify perceptions of Māori deficit statistics by investigating recent statements made in the media by non-Māori academic professor Greg Newbold. Professor Newbold as a criminologist and sociologist is considered an expert in his field. This presentation considers contributing factors that also influence current Māori deficit statistics. There will be a deconstruction of contributing factors to analyse underlying themes using Dr Jenny Lee’s Pūrākau theory. The themes will include legislative violations and their links to Māori deficit statistics, and intergenerational trauma. It will also include traditional Māori concepts of historical trauma, and traditional Māori expressions of historical trauma. Epigenetic research will also be introduced to explain how stress or trauma moves from one generation to the next. The final aspect will be using sociological theories to respond to a non Maori expert.
