Abstract or Summary

This report is a snapshot of literacy- and numeracy-embedding practices recorded in 32 classroom observations conducted by the LN-embedding team for the period 2015 and 2016. Our purpose was mainly to describe two dimensions typically associated with LN-embedding practices, and prompted by Tertiary Education Commission [TEC] policy guide-lines (TEC, 2009a). The first refers to the educators’ skill at accomplishing lessons as interactive events. These interactions, intended to be reciprocal learning conversations, denote educators’ skill at creating and managing interactional spaces. Educators mobilize their interactional skills to circumvent barriers when these occur in learning. The second relates to educators’ use of literacy and numeracy (LN) strategies and techniques to enhance learning. Our findings showed how level-1 thematic labels were configured in terms of 14 categories. We found supporting evidence for the two dimensions of LN-embedded practice in the observations and our analysis. These were identified in a cluster analysis (CA) and then cross-validated in a factor-analytic principal components analysis (PCA). We concluded that significant evidence of LN-embedded practice was available for the two dimensions of LN-embedding practice at the institute. Not only were LN strategies integrated into pedagogical plans and practices, they were aligned with outcomes, materials, activities and assessment tasks (Biggs & Tang, 2007), and occurred in dialogically accomplished educator-learner and learner-learner exchanges.
