Abstract or Summary

This chapter presents the findings of a research collaboration involving a series of e-mail interviews conducted with applied linguists in seven locations across Asia: Cambodia, China, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The interviews explored issues in the provision of English Medium Instruction (EMI) that were evidenced at a specific institution in each of the locations. The focus was EMI policy, practices, and perceptions of the future. The interviewees acted both as informants in supplying previously gained knowledge, and co-researchers in reporting perspectives gleaned from EMI instructors at the selected institution. The present study therefore presents issues in EMI provision across a small number of East- and South-East Asian universities, and in so doing complements Dearden’s (2014) global survey and the individual case study approach of the other contributions to this volume and elsewhere.
