Obsolescence: A sound work for audio cassettes by Kent Macpherson

Abstract or Summary

This audio installation focuses on obsolete materials. The only ‘new’ aspect of the media used are the batteries. All of the players were borrowed or rescued from skips. If a player has stopped please feel free to replace its batteries and/or eject and turn the cassette tape over to the other side. The sound sources you are hearing are pure sine wave tones, recorded using the notes C, E, G and B. As the players run at varying speeds, there are discrepancies in the actual pitch of the tones being produced.
