Abstract or Summary

Conference Paper Presented at the NZMS Annual Conference, Nov 29-Dec 1st, 2019 This paper presents the argument that listeners of popular music can “hear” queerness in songs, similar to how ‘gaydar’ is said to be the ability to detect non-normative sexualities from a distance, in a notion, I am terming ‘sonic gaydar’. In this paper, I argue that it is possible to identify some potential musical (exclusive of lyric) cues of queerness in popular music (including, but not limited to tonal juxtapositions, and melodic/harmonic ambiguity), as is apparent in the work of queer artists St. Vincent and Janelle Monáe.
