Evaluating and researching video enhanced learning environments

Abstract

The increased sophistication and decreasing costs of digital cameras, the ease of use of video editing software applications and the growing maturity of digital delivery platforms has led to a significant increase in the use of video to enhance digitally based learning environments. A key question to be addressed is, what are the impacts of this increased use of video on the educational experiences of learners? While it is possible to employ a number of methods to observe, investigate and report on the use of video in teaching and learning these studies can be time consuming, often expensive to conduct and the findings are not unproblematic. The purpose of this paper is to explore how video enhanced learning environments can be investigated in a reliable, efficient and economical way.
