Mobile access to course information, library services and digital content, communications between learners and educators, between educational institutions and students, have all been transformed as a result of the availability of relatively low-cost mobile devices, the development of sophisticated mobile applications, increased mobile connectivity and the increased mobile access to a range of digital databases . However, the limited input functionalities of mobile devices means accessing stored information, digital content and support services is often an unfriendly user experience ultimately affecting the uptake of mobile-technologies in educational institutions. To increase the impact of mobile deployments a number of institutions are actively exploring the potential of Quick Response (QR) Codes to enable speedy and ready access to information, content and services . QR Codes were initially developed by the Denso-Wave Corporation in Japan. They are two-dimensional (2D) barcode (matrix codes) storing data in both the vertical and horizontal direction. This means substantial amounts of information (such as personal contact details, digital content website addresses, text messages, and numerical information) can be embedded within the code. This information is then de-coded by any mobile-device with an installed camera and a QR Code reading application . It is anticipated the embedding of QR codes learning environments will enable users to readily engage with learning materials and access support services from anywhere and at anytime. Since 2008 the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) has been systematically reviewing its open, flexible and networked learning capability using results obtained from an external review using a benchmarking tool, the e-Learning Maturity Model (eMM) . During this review a pictorial framework, A.C.E, was developed firstly, to guide the introduction of open, flexible and networked learning activities undertaken within the institution and secondly, to provide a diagrammatic overview to increase institutional awareness of these technologies. The A.C.E. pictorial framework is underpinned by three As, Cs and Es, hence the name A.C.E. Conceptual Framework. The three As are aligned with the identifiable stages of a project life cycle: awareness, action and accomplishment. The framework also aligns with what Wintec considers to be the three foundation pillars of flexible learning  context, content and capability. The framework then progresses to an indicator layer conceptualized by the team as the 3Es, enabled, engaged and empowered. This poster presentation will graphically illustrate how the ACE framework for the introduction of QR codes within the Waikato Institute of Technology has been constructed. It is hoped other institutions, who wish to systematically enhance capability in m-learning, will find the A.C.E. pictorial framework a useful tool. 1.
