Abstract
This exhibition at the Waitakaruru Sculpture Park, Hamilton, was curated by Tim Walker, director of the Dowse Art Museum, Wellington. Various artists were in this show, including Para Matchitt, Christian Nicholson, David McCracken, John Edgar, Bernie Harfleet, Donna Sarten, Gaye Jurisich and Ben Caldwell. The works by Gareth Williams belong to a series of work that explore instances of vernacular architecture as they appear in the New Zealand landscape. They examine the relationships between designed and non-designed architectural elements in the landscape and also consider human needs and social practices. These works explore structures that relate to light industrial architecture. ‘Queen St.’ is sited at the top of staircase leading down to a now disused quarry. ‘Airport Rd.’ is sited up a long staircase with sweeping views over central Waikato. This work was awarded the Harkness Henry Award for Best Sculpture in this exhibition. It was judged by Artist Brett Graham, and Emma Bugden of Artspace Gallery (director), Auckland.
