Mindfulness, psychological capital, and well-being: A four study sample of organizational leaders

Abstract

Organizational leaders at all levels are facing unprecedented challenges. Yet, some seem to be handling the pressure better than others. Utilizing a four sample study comprised of: CEOs (N=205), middle (N=183), junior (N=202) leaders, and 107 entrepreneurs, we tested the direct effect of mindfulness levels, and the mediating effect of psychological capital, on all four samples. In all samples, over a range of dysfunctional mental health outcomes specifically anxiety, depression, negative affect, cynicism and emotional exhaustion, mindfulness was found to be negatively related to outcomes. For all four samples, psychological capital provided partial mediation effects on the negative relationship between mindfulness and the dysfunctional outcomes. Thus providing support for the benefits of mindfulness in combating dysfunctional outcomes for leaders.
