Richard spoke about his research in China and New Zealand testing an hypothesis that the definite article is a neglected area of grammar, with reference to 83 essays of Chinese students. Whereas some earlier research found that errors related to article use constituted over 20% of all grammatical errors in Chinese students' writing (at around CAE level), Richard's analysis of the corpus of 83 essays found that errors relating to article use constituted half this amount, around 10%. It was concluded that article misuse may not be a neglected problem.
