In a research project five senior Pakeha counselling practitioners reflected on challenges they face when practicing cross-culturally. As part of the project, stories of careful and successful practice were told alongside stories of challenge. Further developments in their practice came as the counsellors focused their attention on the discursive context of challenging practice situations and identified position calls which put limits on their effectiveness. Once the unhelpful position calls were identified and different positions were taken up, more satisfying and effective practice resulted.
