Abstract

The exhibition expands on previous work exploring the concept -the Anthropocene and the connection between humans – as the planet’s top geologic agents and birds. My response was to create a photographic and sound installation – ‘Performing Nature Unnaturally’ in collaboration with my colleague, musician Matthew Bannister to explore overlaps between bird calls and human modes of communication and how our relationship with birds has become increasingly mediated via screens.
In recognising how the long-term well-being of birds is closely interconnected with our own prospects for a sustainable future, the installation invited reflection on how we might imagine our relationship with nga taonga manu anew – beside them as kin.
