Abstract

The Centre of Engineering and Industrial Design team recently moved into a newly designed building at WINTEC’s Rotokauri campus. Design features of this building include open shared facilitation spaces coupled with instant student access to the internet at any time (through own devices or movable computers). Simulation equipment is available for class to “wheel in or wheel out” as applicable.
In moving to this space it was necessary for the CEID staff to redevelop their teaching and learning approach to mimic 21st century learning paradigms; the aim being to utilise the buildings space to its full potential to enable students the greatest possibility to succeed. During this redeveloped approach staff were required to change their initial focus from delivered content and focus on the activity that would lead to exploration of the content. This resulted in a large amount of student centred activities and assessments being introduced to the engineering curriculum. A model, OSCAR, was developed to help in this transition.
This presentation will be useful for all facilitators of learning as the presentation will explore:
• The engineering philosophy at WINTEC
• The building design (how it aids learning)
• The curriculum development model
• Examples of student centred activities
• Examples of student centred assessment
