The level of interconnectedness of the learning environment impacted on the learning outcomes of students in three case studies. The studies (of between 3 – 6 months duration) were completed with native and non-native learners studying, computer-based English programmes. Included in the studies were Japanese university students preparing for a short-term study break in New Zealand, allied hospital staff working in Malaysia and New Zealand youth training for work. There were variations on the blended delivery formats, along with a variation on the connection between the online and face-to-face content. However, despite these variations, outcomes suggest there is a key factor in learner success.
