Writing and journalism projects undertaken in conjunction with outside organisations offer a break in the routine, a chance to work with real world outcomes and a more varied portfolio for graduating students to take with them. It may also help round out students’ understanding of the world they will enter after study.
This presentation looks at several such projects undertaken over the past three years, in which Wintec journalism students have written for a range of organisations and outcomes. Projects have included interviewing and writing about people living with intellectual disability, and writing for an exhibition at the Waikato Art Museum focusing on Hamilton’s open spaces.
In many cases, the students have been required to work with students from other disciplines, most notably photography. Their work has been published in books as well as online.
