The chapter explores a variety of colonial legislation and dominant discourses that are prevalent in Aotearoa New Zealand society. The chapter commences with discussing the history of colonial legislation. The chapter will then discuss Māori lore/law and how the historical relationship between Pākehā and Māori was established. The chapter will conclude with discussing the imposition of colonial legislation and its impact for Māori today.
