Abstract
4x3
The international poster project was a shared curatorial exercise recontextualizing posters from diverse cultures and time spans that either reinforced their original political messages or evoked new meanings in that opinionated, vulnerable, ephemeral and bold poster language.
To initiate the process I sent the first proposal. Chris McBride, John Mandelberg and John Phillips responded.
We then each proposed and responded by e-mail. The brief was open and accompanied with a text describing our rational for our selections. This sometimes came easy and other times we waited for the others response, changed our minds coming to new connections.
As John Phillips puts it:
“The exhibition 4x3, is the outcome of this enjoyable, intercontinental, time–travelling escapade, which at times felt as close to a game of poker, as it did an act of collaborative curation”.
The total number of posters is 48, 12 from each one of us, that is 3 proposals and 9 responses.
Now I will show you all the posters, you won’t be able to feel the paper, smell the inks or feel the textures but this digital projection will give you a good idea of our game / project / exhibition.
