This presentation gives background into limited literacy learners who often present in our institution with developing oral proficiency but with very limited writing and reading skills. Literature from Ong (1982) and Croydon, A. (2005) Making It Real: Teaching Pre-literate Adult Refugee Students. Tacoma Project in the United States was reviewed.
Strategies for working with limited literacy learners included scaffolding, varying tasks, the language experience approach and peer support in class.
