Globally, tertiary enrolments in computer science and information technology programs have declined dramatically from a peak in 2002. By 2007 there were fifty percent fewer enrolments, or EFTS (Equivalent Full Time Students), in ICT programs in New Zealand universities and institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITP).

Over the same period the demand for ICT graduates, both here in New Zealand and globally, has increased, thus creating a critical shortage of suitably qualified candidates to fill the ICT vacancies. Using statistics published by the Department of Labour and advertised job vacancies on the Seek IT & T web site, this skills gap has been most evident in New Zealand’s three main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Statistics from Australian sources indicate a similar shortage of ICT graduates and a comparable skills gap in their main centres of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Recent improvements to ICT enrolment numbers in ITPs indicate an increase in interest by students pursuing ICT as an appealing and viable career option. ITPs experienced an 8% increase in ICT enrolments between 2007 and 2008 and the indications for 2009 are for an increase of at least 12% on the 2008 EFTS. In spite of the recent global economic recession, a demand for suitably qualified ICT graduates is still evident in the Australasian job market.
This paper charts relevant global enrolment and job vacancy trends over the last seven years and reviews the impact of recent global economic events on ICT.
