This poster reports on a summer research project that investigated ways in which students and teachers use the Science Learning Hub (SLH) website. The website, launched in 2007, is funded by MoRST and is maintained by the University of Waikato.

The project to date has concentrated on the collection and processing of data from a series of classroom observations of a group of primary school students using the SLH website. In particular, it was hoped that valuable insights would be gained through the probing of students’ ideas and knowledge around the use of the SLH website and also their use of video clips featured on the website.

Data collection tools are described and data processing methods are outlined in the poster. A critical data processing method employed was the use of Studiocode, a powerful software package used for detailed video analysis of in-class videos. Two cases of student activity were captured on video and processed using Studiocode, resulting in tentative conclusions based on analysis of their interaction with the SLH website.
