This paper reports on a pilot study into teacher use of the Science Learning Hub [SLH] website. The SLH is a web-based science teacher resource developed to present science in context and to showcase New Zealand scientists. The science content of the website concentrates on supporting the curriculum needs of year 9 and 10 teachers. In this pilot study four teachers and one each of their year 9 and 10 classes (108 students) took part. The study examined practices in the different classrooms to see how the teachers and their students used this resource and what opportunities for learning were created. The video analysis software Studiocode was used to develop a descriptive analysis. The project identified a distinct change of student activity when the website was used over three or more lessons. Key themes that emerged were that teachers tailored their approaches to suit their students, the SLH was perceived as a trustworthy and interesting resource for student inquiry, students needed time to explore and make sense of the resource, and that teachers need to be aware of the affordances of the website. This is an ongoing project and further research is planned.
