The purpose of the short paper is to provide an insight into students’ perceptive of the use of a Marae-based educational environment for teaching cultural sensitive material. The findings reported in this paper are based on students’ experiences of a two overnight stay on a rural Marae in the Thames/Coromandel region of New Zealand. Marae customs and Kawa (protocol) indigenous to the region were taught and adhered to whilst on the Marae. Both students and academic staff in attendance were involved in the powhiri (welcome), including waiata (song) and mihimihi (self history), and finally the poroporoaki (farewell). Learning outcomes set included students gaining knowledge of Maori kawa, incorporating those indigenous to the local iwi (tribe), and local mythology. The assessment of learning outcomes was largely completed on the Marae.
